Last-mile delivery is the point where a fulfilled ecommerce order becomes a customer experience. The parcel has already been stored, picked and packed; now the business has to choose how it reaches the recipient.

In Singapore, that can mean doorstep courier delivery, a carrier selected through a 3PL, parcel lockers or other collection points. The best option depends on the parcel, customer promise, service area, tracking requirements and what should happen when delivery fails.

Doorstep courier delivery is the familiar default

A courier collects or receives the parcel and delivers it to the customer's address. This is simple for the buyer, but the operation still needs to define carrier selection, handover, tracking, proof of delivery and the process for unsuccessful attempts.

The customer-facing shipping promise should match the warehouse cut-off and the actual carrier service rather than a generic “fast delivery” claim.

A 3PL can connect fulfilment to several carrier options

A 3PL can hand completed parcels into different delivery services according to the agreed workflow. That can reduce the need for a brand to build separate operational processes for every carrier.

Collection points and lockers create another delivery path

Parcel lockers and collection points allow a customer to retrieve a parcel rather than requiring a successful doorstep handover. Singapore's parcel-locker infrastructure is designed to aggregate deliveries and give recipients more flexibility over collection.

This can be useful where recipients are often away from home, where secure unattended delivery is difficult or where a carrier's supported service includes a suitable collection network.

Not every parcel fits every collection option

Locker dimensions, weight limits, commodity restrictions and carrier support vary. Large, fragile, controlled, temperature-sensitive or high-value products may require a different service.

Check the physical parcel profile before offering a delivery option at checkout. An option that looks convenient in the storefront should not create a manual exception after packing.

Choose the service level from the customer promise backward

Same-day, next-day and standard delivery create different warehouse and carrier requirements. Start with the final handover and work backward through carrier collection, packing, picking and order release.

Tracking should follow the parcel across the handover

Capture the carrier and tracking reference when the shipment leaves the fulfilment operation. The customer should be able to understand whether the order is still being prepared, has been handed to the carrier or is moving through the delivery network.

Internally, tracking events are also useful for separating warehouse delay from carrier delay.

Plan for failed delivery before the first attempt

An unsuccessful delivery can create reattempt cost, customer-service work and a return-to-sender movement. Define how address errors, recipient absence, access restrictions and other exceptions should be handled.

Returns should connect back to inventory

A last-mile service is stronger when the reverse flow is understood too. A returned parcel may need to move back to the warehouse, be identified against the original order, inspected and assigned a stock disposition.

Do not restore returned inventory to saleable status simply because the courier has marked it returned.

International delivery is a separate design question

Domestic Singapore last mile and cross-border delivery have different customs, carrier and destination requirements. Compare cost per successful delivery, not only the first quote

A cheap service can become expensive if it generates more failed attempts, manual customer-service work or returns to sender. Compare the full cost of completing the delivery, including the operational cost of exceptions.

Build last mile as part of fulfilment, not after it

Carrier selection, label creation, tracking and handover should be part of the order workflow before the parcel reaches the packing bench. That reduces manual decisions at the end of every order.
